Few things can spoil a trip faster than getting billed for things you didn’t expect and services you didn’t use. Travelers groups, website operators and now Congress is showing annoyance with all those hidden fees from hotels.
I was delighted to read about that on the Sunday I’d just returned from an out-of-state conference. My hotel bill had been a shock. We’d all arrived with backpacks or little wheeled suitcases, so no one needed assistance getting out of cabs or into rooms. But each was charged $5 for the day we checked in and the day we checked out for “bellman services.”
The rooms were costly, as almost all hotel rooms are these days even with conference discounts, so it was a surprise to see a daily $2 charge for “maid services.” Doesn’t maid service come with the room anymore? It was especially annoying since we’d all left cash tips for the maids on the nightstands before we saw the bills.
