JOSHUA CARMODY IS NOW SITTING IN THE POLK COUNTY JAIL, CHARGED WITH MURDER AND BURGLARY. OFFICERS SAY HE FORCED HIS WAY INTO A ROOM AT THE RAMADA ALONG ARMY POST ROAD DOWN BY THE AIRPORT LAST MONTH. SAVE ON PROPS AND A WOMAN WERE INSIDE THAT ROOM. INVESTIGATORS SAY PROPS FIRED A GUN AT CARMODY IN SELF-DEFENSE. CARMODY IS THEN ACCUSED

Des Moines police charge suspect with murder after deadly hotel shooting

Des Moines police have made an arrest following last month’s deadly shooting at a hotel.Police arrested Joshua Ryan Carmody, 31, of Des Moines. Carmody is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary.Police say Carmody forced his way into a southside Des Moines hotel room occupied by 30-year-old Sayvon Propps and a woman who has not been identified. Propps fired a gun at Carmody in self-defense but was shot and killed by Carmody, according to police.Carmody was treated for injuries at a nearby hospital and charged after being released.Carmody has also been charged with interference with official acts with a firearm, a felony, in connection to a separate incident on March 11. In that case, police say officers located a suspect vehicle after reports of shots fired near Fleur Drive and McKinley Avenue. The driver, identified later as Carmody, fled the scene on foot.
