Plattsburgh’s Common Council unanimously rejected the city’s Restore New York grant program application Thursday evening.The city had proposed transforming a former bank on Brinkerhoff Street into a boutique hotel and restaurant. However, a couple of councilors expressed concerns about not being notified of the proposal in advance. Additionally, questions arose about the real estate company looking to purchase the property, which also owns a space housing a coffee shop managed by Mayor Chris Rosenquest’s family.During a public discussion, several city residents voiced their opinions on the matter, reflecting a range of perspectives on the proposed project.The grant program aims to assist municipalities in redeveloping vacant properties into housing or commercial spaces. With the application deadline less than a week away, the rejection leaves little time for an alternative proposal. Initially, the city had also considered revitalizing a former military building at the U.S. Oval as part of the application. But city leaders decided to not include it in the application this year. Despite the setback with the Brinkerhoff Street project, city officials confirmed they will continue to pursue the U.S. Oval project for next year’s grant application.
