AVON, Conn. (WFSB) – In April, dozens of families were forced out of their homes following a fire.

It happened at the Avon Place Apartments.

Tenants were put up in hotels and were abruptly notified those accommodations are expiring.

“They canceled our hotel accommodations. We don’t know where to go,” Raksha Gupta, Avon.

Raksha Gupta and her family lived at the Avon Place Apartments off Route 10 for about 3 years.

On April 21st, flames spread through the apartment building. 57 units were impacted.

“It looks pretty bad, from the outside it looks all boarded up and everything. On the inside, it’s far worse. Everything is kinda destroyed,” said Samarth Gupta, Avon.

None of the residents were injured and tenants were put up in nearby hotels.

But today, those accommodations expired.

“Where to go? We are living in the car, packing and unpacking. We moved 5 times from hotel to hotel,” Raksha said.

In an email that went out from management, tenants were told: “We tried to extend the stay for as long as possible. Other housing options are being explored for different properties in Avon, Wethersfield and Stamford. We will try to accommodate as many tenants as we possibly can.”

“Basically, we don’t know where we’re going tomorrow,” said David Ossorio, Avon.

For tenants like Raksha, getting a new home in a different town would be a challenge since her daughter is currently enrolled in Avon Public Schools.

“It’s not possible to go to Stamford or Wethersfield. Where my kids will be? They have final exams, they have to come to school. It’s tough for them,” Raksha said.

Tenants say the town of Avon has been helpful in providing them with gift cards following the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Eyewitness News reached out to the Avon Place Apartments for a comment but did not hear back.
